If you missed it, the before and after pictures of the kitchen are here
This post is all about the process of transforming an old gross kitchen..
This is what we had to work with.
Matt HATED those apples, they were the first thing he wanted gone haha
The kitchen was gross and kind of falling down, but for the most part the cabinets were
useable. Matt did a little big of work on the cabinets themselves, but not too much.
The goal is to tear this kitchen out eventually and put in a new one.
But heaven knows it will be a while before that happens.
So our goal was to get it as nice as we could while spending as little money as possible.
So we decided to pain the cabinets.
I had been wanting a white kitchen for a while so I was excited.
We took down all the doors and started to clean them.
And quickly realized how gross they were
Our cleaning process was to take a screw driver and scrape the gunk out of the edges of the doors and then
wash them down with cleaning product.
It was lots of fun :)
Once we got all the doors off I painted the faces or frames or whatever you would call that.
The countertops were tricky.
We definitely needed something cause
we weren't feeling the yellow that was there ;)
We eventually decided on counter top paint.
Who even knew that was a thing??
You paint it on your countertops and then let it dry for a
few days and voila!
It feels just like real counter tops and it was a super cheap way to go.
I am definitely excited for real countertops someday,
but this is a good temporary solution.
I was so excited when all the yellow was gone!
We took all the cabinet doors down to the basement to pain them.
Luckily we had a friend that let us borrow his paint gun.
I was prepared to roll the paint onto all of those doors, but the gun made it soo much easier.
We used an acrylic enamel paint that was self leveling.
Man that stuff was not fun to work with.
unlike normal paint it was impossible to get off your hands and out of brushes.
But it is definitely what you want for cupboards!
It cleans really well and doesn't scratch off easy or anything like that.
We actually moved in before we got the door painted..
We just couldn't wait any longer!
But we got them painted and hung not long after we moved in.
The back splash was a different story thought..
It took several months before we put it in.
So it looked like this for a while
We decided to do bead board for the backsplash.
Once again it was a less expensive, but nice looking way to go.
And man did it make a difference!
We were a little worried that having white doors and a white backsplash
would be a little much, but I love it!!
I love how bright and light my kitchen is.
We also LOVE our floors.
We chose to do a vinyl plank because it is water proof.
And there will always be water spills in the kitchen.
I am really excited about the lights in the kitchen and dining room.
We got the chandelier at DI for 25 dollars.
Then several weeks later we went back and found
those round lights!
They match the chandelier perfectly!!
And they were 5 dollars each.
We love DI
As you can see we are still rockin the yellow sink..
We have a different sink that my parents gave us,
but putting it in just hasn't happened yet.
I'm not gonna lie I've gotten kind of attached to the yellow haha
We found these bar stools at DI as well.
I believe they were 6 dollars a piece (maybe 5 I can't remember)
We recovered them and tightened a few screws and they are as good as new!
The handles are the ones that were already on the cabinets.
Turns out handles aren't cheap!
All these needed was some cleaning
I actually like them pretty good so I was glad that worked out
I am loving my kitchen!
There are still some things we want to do but I couldn't
wait anymore to show off our progress.
Renovating the kitchen isn't super easy, but it's definitely doable!
And it doesn't have to cost a fortune either!
Not counting the floor and decorations our kitchen reno was probably around
120 dollars. I should have kept better track so I could tell you a for sure number, but I remember an
estimate of what each thing cost.
I'm loving our progress!
Life is good :)
